Free exams
Your first city exam can be free.
Never taken a city exam, or still in an NYC high school? The city waives the exam fee. Veterans, and people who are unemployed or on public assistance, can take it free too.
Why a city job?
- Full-time pay, every two weeks. 95% of open city postings are full-time.
- A pension. 86% of state and local government workers can get one. In private jobs, 14% can (Bureau of Labor Statistics, March 2026).
- Health insurance with a $0 premium. Several city health plans cost you nothing a month (Office of Labor Relations, July 2026).
- Protected once you're in. Pass probation in an exam job and the law says you can only be fired for cause, after a hearing (Civil Service Law 75).
- College credit for training. The NYPD academy counts for 45 college credits (Mayor's Office, 2025). The Correction Officer academy counts for 21 (exam notice).
- Raises by contract. And promotion exams to move up.
