The New York City Department of Homeless Services (DHS) is the largest organization in the United States dedicated to preventing and addressing homelessness.
In partnership with other City Agencies and Nonprofit Organizations, DHS works to prevent homelessness before it begins, reduces street homelessness, provide temporary shelter, and connect individuals and families to stable housing—all with a focus on accountability, empathy, and equity.
DHS is committed to continuous improvement and employs innovative strategies to deliver high-quality services that support a swift transition from shelter to self-sufficiency. The agency manages hundreds of facilities and operates with a large team as well as a several billion-dollar budget to meet the diverse needs of New Yorkers experiencing homelessness.
The Division of Shelter Intake is responsible for the oversight of the day-to-day operations of the agency’s Single Adult, Adult Families and Families with Children’s intake and assessment sites, both directly run and contracted providers.
This Division is responsible for ensuring that the City’s most vulnerable population can access shelter, per eligibility criteria, 24hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
The Department of Homeless Services (DHS) is recruiting for one (1) Administrative Director of Social Services M-I to function as a Director of Programs at Auburn Men’s Assessment Shelter within the Shelter Intake Division who will:
- Oversee overall case management and placement services, as well as operational matters, when appropriate.
- Provide technical assistance and supervision to social services staff.
- Facilitate efficient permanent placements for housing-ready clients; interpret agency policies and procedures; and ensure compliance with applicable federal and state mandates, rules, and regulations.
- Enforce and implement program guidelines, assist with the implementation of new initiatives and strategies, and recommend modifications to enhance program services.
- Provide expertise and technical assistance in exceptional cases to ensure effective solutions.
- Liaise with shelter staff and community-based providers to facilitate client placement into alternative housing; work in conjunction with the DHS Training Bureau to ensure social service staff receive adequate training; develop and enforce staffing schedules; and prepare, coordinate, and participate in case conferences and meetings.
- Interface with DHS-contracted sites and various agencies directly involved in providing care for individuals experiencing homelessness and monitor client noncompliance with Client Responsibility.
- Monitor social services staff to ensure they refer income-based and long-term shelter clients to the Housing Specialist weekly; submit two housing applications per week; review ten cases weekly; and meet with staff to discuss case findings.

Ensure social service staff are referring clients to all applicable financial entitlements for income and complying with savings requirements; review Next Step referrals; ensure weekly follow-up with clients regarding contract compliance; and lead weekly meetings to discuss client move-outs, income-based clients, long-term shelter residents, program initiatives, client incident reports, and social services concerns.
Hours/Schedule: Tuesday-Saturday 8am-4pm.
