Assistant Borough Chief - Family Court: Juvenile Justice

Job Description The New York City Law Department is accepting applications from admitted attorneys for Assistant Borough Chief in our Family Court Division’s Juvenile Justice practice in our Queens Office. The Juvenile Justice practice handles cases involving youth under the age of 18 who are charged with committing acts, which if committed by an adult, would be a crime. The Assistant Borough Chief reports directly to a Deputy Borough Chief and plays a key leadership role in supervising legal and support staff, ensuring high-quality practice, and advancing the mission of the Division. The Assistant Borough Chief is responsible for supervising and training attorneys and providing legal, strategic, and procedural guidance to attorneys and support professionals. The Assistant Borough Chief also maintains an active caseload while reviewing attorneys’ work and conducting courtroom observations. They also assist Borough Chiefs with office initiatives, administrative duties, and development/implementation of borough and division-wide policies, procedures, and protocols. The Assistant Borough Chief must also develop and maintain relationships with community stakeholders and maintain a consistent presence in Community neighborhoods to address juvenile delinquency and support Interstate Child Support matters. Assistant Borough Chiefs also attend and/or present external trainings to identify emerging issues in practice and present at staff meetings on legal issues, practice updates, and changes to statutes and caselaw. The Assistant Borough Chief must also participate in performance assessments of staff and represent the Division at interagency meetings and serve as liaison to city and statewide partners including, but not limited to, NYPD, the Department of Probation, and ACS. The Assistant Borough Chief will also participate in a citywide rotation of night/weekend court assignments. The role is particularly suited for attorneys seeking meaningful public service, particularly with regard to the success and well-being of the youth families and communities of NYC. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Salary Information The Law Department sets salaries for new attorneys based on their post law school legal experience, which typically aligns with their law school graduation year. - For 0–5 years of legal experience: $87,737–$122,300 - For 5-10 years of legal experience: $122,300-137,188 - For 10-15 years of legal experience: $137,188-$159,521 - For 15-20 years of legal experience: $159,521-$180,791 - For 20+ years of legal experience: $180,791-$188,235 Candidates with highly specialized experience may qualify for salaries slightly above these ranges when a role requires such expertise or the position is considered hard to fill. Work From Home Options Following orientation, attorneys may elect to participate in one of two remote work programs: 1. Flexible Remote Work: Allows limited, irregular work from home days. 2. Citywide Pilot Program: Allows attorneys to work remotely on two set days per week, subject to Division approval and staffing needs. Participants must maintain a single designated remote work location, and in person obligations take precedence over scheduled remote days. This pilot is currently being tested across City agencies and is not yet permanent. Minimum Qualification Requirements The Juvenile Justice practice is dedicated to providing outstanding legal advocacy. Accordingly, candidates must be graduates from an ABA accredited law school, be admitted and in good standing in New York, and have a minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience. Candidates should also have: a demonstrated knowledge of and experience in delinquency and criminal law; strong leadership, communication, analytical, and organizational skills; the ability to work effectively with court stakeholders, partner agencies, community groups, and diverse staff; and a commitment to the mission of the Family Court Division and to improving outcomes for children, families, and communities. Preferred Skills Preferred, but not required, qualifications include: supervisory or managerial experience in Family Court or comparable settings; investigation/trial experience in juvenile delinquency; experience leading interagency collaborations or community-based initiatives; and a demonstrated success in staff development and performance management.
