3. Pass the screenings: Medical, physical, psychological, and character requirements, the same ones a School Safety Agent must meet. Be honest and exact on every form.
4. Start the job: You work alongside an experienced School Safety Agent: greeting students and visitors, checking doors, windows and gates, preventing trespass, answering phones, and calling for help when it's needed. 40 hours a week. The posting lists health insurance, paid leave, holidays and a pension.
5. At 21, take the School Safety Agent exam: The posting says applicants over the age of 21 are eligible to apply for the School Safety exam. That's the full School Safety Agent title, with its own exam and pay scale.

3. Fill out the Education and Experience Exam: There's no written test. Your score comes from an Education and Experience Exam you fill out in OASys. Meeting the minimums gets you 70 points. Extra points, up to 100, come from hands-on patient care work, certain college credits, and certifications like Basic Cardiac Life Support. Final Submit it by midnight on the last filing day. If you don't, you get no score and no refund.
4. Get on the eligible list and wait: Pass and you land on a ranked eligible list, which typically lasts 4 years. Hiring goes down the list as openings come up. This takes months. It's not a rejection. It's how civil service works.
5. Clear the screenings: Before you start: a qualifying physical test, a medical and psychological exam, a drug screening, proof of identity and your right to work in the U.S., and an investigation with a $102.50 fingerprint fee. You must be able to wear a respirator, so no facial hair that breaks its seal. If you have a misdemeanor or felony conviction, you need a clearance letter from the New York State Department of Health.
6. Train, get certified, start the job: A 4-month FDNY training program, then an EMT certification exam and a New York State EMT certificate. Pass those and you move up to Emergency Medical Specialist - EMT without another exam. Probation is 16 months. You sign a Forgivable Loan Agreement: leave before 3 years (156 weeks) as an EMT and you owe part of your training cost. Expect nights, weekends, holidays and all kinds of weather.

How long it takes: No exam to wait for. The postings don't say how long hiring takes.

1. Write a simple resume: Name, contact info, any work, school or volunteer history. The title has no education or experience requirement, so a short resume is fine. Some postings list preferred skills, like writing, communication and computer skills. Show those if you have them.
2. Apply on the city's jobs portal: Search cityjobs.nyc.gov for "Community Assistant". Homeless Services, Probation and the District Attorneys' offices have all posted this title, often under a different job name. Read each posting: the work, pay and hours are very different. Postings come and go, so check what's open today.
3. Interview with the agency: There's no civil service exam. The agency picks who to interview. The posting says to ask about the residency rule at your interview.
4. Start the job: At Probation, the posting lists clerical work: sorting, filing and scanning records, logging cases, photographing clients, and covering the front desk. At Homeless Services, postings list shelter housekeeping, stocking supplies and client services, some on overnight shifts. Full-time for most postings.

## NYPD Cadet (Police Cadet, NYPD)

How long it takes: The Cadet page doesn't say how long processing takes.

1. Go to a Cadet orientation: NYPD Recruit lists upcoming Cadet orientations on its Cadet page, with the date, time and place. Wear business attire. Questions: 212-RECRUIT, or the Cadet Corps at 718-670-9722.
2. Apply: Apply through NYPD Recruit. There's no civil service exam to become a Cadet.
3. Pass the screenings: A character and background investigation, a drug screening, and the Job Standard Test, a timed obstacle course you finish in 4 minutes 28 seconds without stopping. You must be free of any felony convictions. Be honest and complete on every form.
4. Train at the Police Academy: 3 to 4 weeks at the Police Academy before your job assignment. After that, monthly training on the third Saturday of each month.
5. Work around your classes: $19.51 an hour. At least 21 hours a month and no more than 34 a week while school is in session, usually 4 to 8 hours a day. Full time in summer. Keep a 2.0 GPA and at least 12 credits a semester. Tuition help: up to $20,000 ($2,500 to $5,000 a semester, for up to four semesters). It comes as a check paid to you, not to your school (Police sources, on background), and you don't pay it back after two years as a New York City Police Officer.
6. Take the Police Officer exam as a Cadet: Take the first Police Officer exam available while you're a Cadet. For you it counts as a promotional exam, and 70 passes. To be appointed a Police Officer you still need to meet that title's requirements, including age 20 and a half and 24 college credits with a 2.0 GPA.

- Admission notice: The email telling you when and where to show up for your test, and what to bring. It arrives two to three weeks before test day.
- Call letter: An agency's invitation to interview you, sent when your turn on the list comes up. Answer it even to say no, or you can be dropped from the list.
- Certified list: The part of a civil service list officially sent to an agency so it can hire from it.
- Civil service list: The ranked list of everyone who passed an exam, in score order. Agencies hire from it. Scores stay active for up to four years.
- Competitive title: A job title where you show you are right for it by passing a competitive exam: multiple-choice, practical, education and experience, or a mix. On our job pages this shows as "Civil service exam title".
- DCAS: The Department of Citywide Administrative Services. It runs the city’s civil service exams and OASys.
- Education and experience (E&E) exam: An exam scored on your education and work history instead of a sit-down test. Many are taken online while you apply. Common for professional titles.
- Exempt title: A job, usually working closely with an agency head, where the agency sets the qualifications and picks who it hires. No civil service exam.
- Fee waiver: Some applicants can take an exam without paying the fee. Eligible veterans can use waivers on every exam. The Notice of Examination lists who qualifies.
- 55-a Program: Lets a qualified person with a certified disability be hired into exam titles without taking the exam.
- Filing period: The window, usually about three weeks, when you can apply to take a specific exam. Nothing is accepted before or after it.
- Labor class: Unskilled labor jobs, where a competitive exam is not practical. No civil service exam.
- Multiple-choice exam: The usual test for entry-level titles open to the public: 40 to 150 questions, answered on a sheet with a No. 2 pencil.
- Notice of Examination (NOE): The official document for one exam: the job, who qualifies, what's on the test, the fee and the dates. It is the final word; read all of it before applying.
- Non-competitive title: A job title where a competitive exam is not practical, so the agency checks that your qualifications meet the standard instead. You apply directly. On our job pages this shows as "No exam for this title".
- OASys: DCAS's Online Application System, where you apply for exams, pay fees, and check your results.
- One-in-three rule: Under New York State law, an agency hiring from a list may choose any one of the three highest-scoring people on it.
- Open competitive exam: An exam open to anyone who meets the minimum qualifications in its Notice of Examination. These are the exams on our calendar.
- Permanent civil service status: What you have after being hired from an exam list and passing probation. It lets you take promotion exams.
- Practical or physical exam: A test of a hands-on skill or fitness, often given on top of a multiple-choice exam.
- Probationary period: A trial period after being hired from a list. Passing it gives you permanent status.
- Promotion exam: An exam open only to permanent city employees moving up within their career track.
- Protest period: A 30-day window to challenge answers in the proposed answer key. Everyone is scored on the final key, set after the protests are reviewed.
- Provisional appointment: Being hired into an exam title before the exam is given. Postings that allow it say you must take and pass the exam when it becomes available to keep the job.
- Qualified incumbent exam: An exam for current city employees serving provisionally in certain titles, after two or more years.
- Selective certification: When an agency hires people from a list who have a specialized skill it needs right now, ahead of others on the list who do not.
- Title code: The number that identifies a civil service job title. Postings and exams for the same title share it; every posting lists it.
